Attraction in the area:
Asen’sFortress: It’s situated at 2 km away from Asenovgrad. It is a medieval Bulgarian fortress named after one of the greatest Bulgarian kings – Tsar Ivan Asen II. During his ruling time the second Bulgarian Kingdom reaches its peak. The church “Sveta Bogorodica Petrichka” (“St. Godmother of Petrich”) is the only part of the fortress that is preserved till now. Inside the church are preserved small mural paintings which date from XIV to XIX century.
Bachkovo Monastery: It is built up in 1083 by the Georgian brothers Grigorii and Abasii Bakuriani. Now Bachkovo Monastery is a cultural monument of national importance. The Monastery consists of: ossuary (dating form XI century); the church “Svetite Arhangeli” (dating form XII century) and the church “Sveta Troitsa” (dating form XVII century). In Bachkovo Monastery there are models of Bulgarian icon-painting from the period of XI – XIX century. Some of the icons are painted by Zahari Zograf himself. The monastery is open at any time and it is the second largest monastery in Bulgaria after Rila Monastery.
The Wonderful Bridges (Chudnite Mostove): They are situated at about 62 km south from Asenovgrad. “The Wonderful Bridges” is one the most attractive natural phenomenon in Rhodope Mountain. It is also known as El Kupria, situated at the bank of river Aidarski Dere, at the top of the hill Chernitsa in central Rhodopes. It is supposed that the phenomenon is a result of an earthquake that pulled down a former cave. The river carried away smaller rock debris. As time goes by under the influence of atmospherics two very rare for their beauty natural marble bridges are formed in the marble rocks. The first bridge (the bigger one) is 12-15 m wide, 96 m long with a 45 m deep and 43 m wide opening. At about 200 m further down the gulch is situated the second bridge. It is 60 m long. The phenomenon is 1450 m above the see level.
KrastovaGora (CrossForest): In central Rhodopes in magnificent nature is situated the monastery “Sveta Troitsa” – Krastova Gora, or as it is marked on the Bulgarian map – Krastov Vrah (Cross Hill). It’s one of the holy places in Bulgaria which the Bulgarians call “Rodopski Jerusalim” (“Rhodope Jerusalem”). According to a legend a part of the Jesus Christ’s cross is buried here in X century.
Belintash: The rock phenomenon Belintash is situated at about 30 km south from Asenovgrad. It is full of mysticism and legends. The majestic silhouette of Belintash is hanging over the Rhodope villages Mostovo, Sini Vrah and Vrata. The upper stage of this stone cairn is flat and smooth and has length of 300 m. Series of furrows, niches and steps as well as deep wells with a shape of a perfect circumference are excavated in it. According to some explorers these hand-made creations are one of the ancient maps of the star-sky and of constellation that dates back from 7000 years. Others go further in their statements: in the remote past Belintash was a platform for space flying machines landing. And the hewn out of the rock co-ordinate net worked as reference point for outer space pilots. However, archeologists are unanimous for Belintash being an ancient sanctuary of God Sabazii reputable by the Thracian tribe Bessi that has inhabited this area. Scientists, however, still have not solved the secret of the ancient sanctuary.
The area is appropriate for: mountain tours, bike tourism, sunbaths, gathering herbs.
